Choose a density with a known source
Bulk density includes the spaces between particles. It is different from the density of the solid mineral alone. Product grading, moisture, compaction and contamination can change the mass contained in the same volume.
Ask your supplier or material specialist for a suitable density or use a documented testing method appropriate to the decision. Record the product, condition, units and source. A generic internet factor is an assumption, not a measurement of your pile.
Keep the ton definition explicit
A US short ton is 2,000 pounds. With volume in cubic yards and density in pounds per cubic foot, the calculation is: short tons = cubic yards × 27 × pounds per cubic foot ÷ 2,000.
If density is already in short tons per cubic yard, multiply it directly by cubic yards. Metric tonnes are 1,000 kilograms and require consistent metric inputs or explicit conversions. Do not mix short tons and metric tonnes in the same report.
An illustrative calculation
Suppose a hypothetical pile occupies 100 cubic yards and a hypothetical bulk density of 100 pounds per cubic foot is used solely to demonstrate the arithmetic. The result is 135 US short tons. Neither number is a recommended material density or a measured Insight project.
If the selected density is wrong, the weight estimate is wrong even when the volume is well measured. The calculator asks you to supply density deliberately and does not choose a default product factor.
Keep measured and calculated results separate
A clear report labels the volume estimate, supplied bulk density and calculated weight separately. It also identifies capture timing and whether loading or deliveries took place between the aerial count and the scale-ticket cutoff.
For transactions, accounting or contractual acceptance, confirm the required method with the responsible parties. An estimated weight is not a replacement for certified weighing where that is required.
- Document the density source and material condition.
- State whether the output is short tons or metric tonnes.
- Compare like-for-like dates and inventory boundaries.
- Retain the original volume so a revised density can be applied.
